The Village Built as a Maze: Zhuge Bagua of Lanxi

八阵图中寻古巷,钟池半亩纳乾坤 Bāzhèntú zhōng xún gǔ xiàng, Zhōngchí bàn mǔ nà qiánkūn – Inside the eight-formation diagram, hunt the old lanes; half a mu of Bell Pond holds the whole universe

诸葛八卦村 Zhūgě Bāguà Cūn Zhuge Bagua Village is the architectural curiosity in the hills of 兰溪 Lánxī Lanxi, under 金华市 Jīnhuá Shì Jinhua City – a 700-year-old settlement planned by the descendants of 诸葛亮 Zhūgě Liàng Zhuge Liang, the Three Kingdoms strategist, on the pattern of his own eight-formation battle array. The core is 钟池 Zhōngchí the Bell Pond – a half-water, half-stone circle – from which eight lanes radiate to eight clan quarters, while eight hills ring the valley outside to close the outer array. First-time visitors walk in circles; residents cut through courtyards that secretly connect one lane to another, exactly as the plan intended.

The village is also the largest living cluster of Zhuge Liang’s descendants – some 4,000 people carrying the name – and their ancestors turned the strategist’s other legend into trade: 「不为良相,便为良医」 bù wéi liáng xiàng, biàn wéi liáng yī “if not a good minister, then a good doctor”. Herbal shops, a medicine museum and the 大经堂 Dàjīngtáng herb hall tell the medical half of the family story; the 丞相祠堂 Chéngxiàng Cítáng Prime Minister’s ancestral temple tells the dynastic half.

The buildings are the quiet draw: over 200 Ming and Qing structures – carved gates, skywelled halls, whitewashed walls going silver-grey – preserved intact because the maze discouraged the wars and the developers alike. The upper lanes hold the craft shops and tea houses; the lower ones hold the morning market, where the village still trades like the market town it once was.

Give it a slow half day with the night option: walk the pond at dusk when the day buses leave, eat in a courtyard, and feel the eight lanes close behind you in earnest. Morning adds the ritual – elders at chess under the hall eaves, herbs drying on the roofs, the mist sitting in the bowl of hills that makes the outer array legible from the ridge path.

Practicalities

  • The village core is a single ticket; the ancestral temple, herb hall and Bell Pond viewpoints are all inside the same walk.
  • Lanxi sits one hour west of Jinhua by bus or car; the village is 20 minutes further into the hills by town bus or taxi.
  • Wear shoes with grip – the flagstone lanes slope and polish slick after rain.
  • Staying overnight inside the village (courtyard guesthouses) is the way to see the maze at rest; day-trippers see it at its busiest.

Words and Names

诸葛八卦村 Zhūgě Bāguà Cūn Zhuge Eight-Trigrams Village; 钟池 Zhōngchí the Bell Pond at the maze’s center; 八阵图 bāzhèntú the eight-formation diagram, Zhuge Liang’s battle array turned town plan; 兰溪 Lánxī the canal city that administers the village. Beyond the maze, the same 金华市 Jīnhuá Shì Jinhua City keeps more places worth the detour: 双龙洞 Shuānglóng Dòng the boat-ride cave of Jinhua Mountain, 横店影视城 Héngdiàn Yǐngshìchéng the film-set city of Hengdian, 方岩 Fāngyán the danxia mesas of Yongkang, or 牛头山 Niútóu Shān the forest canyons of Wuyi – four more doors into the same 金华市 Jīnhuá Shì Jinhua City. Once the eight lanes have let you go, our Jinhua food map fills the table.

flowcloud would say Zhuge Bagua Village is a strategist’s joke that aged well: a town planned as a trap for armies, now trapping only tourists into missing their buses – and the pond at the center still holds half water, half stone, all the patience of the man who designed it. Getting there: Zhuge Bagua Village sits 20 minutes into the hills from Lanxi – buses and trains reach Lanxi from Jinhua in about an hour, and the expressway puts the village ninety minutes from Hangzhou by car. All checked November 2026.
